Kate’s Closet Story

The mission of Kate’s Closet is to support women transitioning into employment and independent living after experiencing difficult life situations by providing professional clothing and accessories, and to facilitate resources such as career readiness workshops and mentorship opportunities.

Opening Scripture

“For such a time as this.”  Esther 4:14

The Founding Story of Kate’s Closet

Kate’s Closet began with a simple desire to help.

As Sugar Plum Fine Jewelry prepared to celebrate International Women’s Day through the Power of Her initiative, Kate began reaching out to local organizations to find a place where donated purses, scarves, and accessories could go directly to women who truly needed them.

She first contacted a local domestic violence organization, hoping they might have a program where these items could be used to help women prepare for job interviews and rebuild their lives. While the organization appreciated the idea, they shared that they did not currently have a program in place where the items would go directly to women entering the workforce.

Kate then reached out to another organization that was working toward creating something similar. They too hoped to build a program someday, but at that time nothing had yet been established.

Later that same day, only a few hours after those conversations, a woman walked into Sugar Plum Fine Jewelry asking if she could speak with Kate.

Kate was assisting a customer at the time, so the woman was asked to leave her name and phone number so Kate could return the call. The woman shared that she was connected to a domestic violence organization and hoped Kate might be able to help her.

A few days later, early on the morning of March 3rd, Kate returned the call. Assuming the woman was calling on behalf of the organization she had previously spoken with, Kate began the conversation expecting to discuss where the donated items could be sent.

Instead, the woman shared her story.

She had recently escaped a domestic violence situation and had been relocated hundreds of miles across the state for safety. Someone had referred her to Sugar Plum because they had heard about the Power of Her promotion.

She explained quietly that she owned very few personal items and had two job interviews scheduled in the coming days. She was hoping Kate might have any clothing or accessories that could help her feel more confident walking into those interviews.

Kate asked the woman what size she wore. To her surprise, the woman wore the exact same clothing size as Kate.

Kate had recently cleaned out her closet and realized she might be able to help in a more meaningful way than she had imagined. She invited the woman to stop by her home after work so she could look through what she had available.

That evening the woman arrived, and together they gathered several outfits along with accessories and pieces that could help her feel prepared and confident for her upcoming interviews. She left with two large bags filled with clothing and accessories that would help her step into those interviews with dignity and confidence.

Later, the woman sent Kate a message thanking her and telling her how much the kindness meant to her. Kate replied simply, “No, you blessed me by allowing me to do this.”

When Kate shared the story with her family, her mother encouraged her to read a passage from scripture.

Hebrews 13:2 says, “Do not forget to show hospitality to strangers, for by so doing some people have shown hospitality to angels without knowing it.”

That verse captured the moment perfectly.

Another detail made the experience even more meaningful. The day this encounter unfolded was March 3rd, the first day of Purim, the Jewish celebration remembering the story of Queen Esther.

The story of Esther reminds us that sometimes we are placed in a moment or a position without fully understanding why, only to later discover that it carries a greater purpose.

In Esther 4:14, Mordecai tells Esther, “For if you remain silent at this time, relief and deliverance will arise from another place… and who knows whether you have come to the kingdom for such a time as this.

In many ways, the moment that woman walked into the store revealed the same kind of calling.

Kate had been searching for a place to send help out into the community. Instead, the need was brought directly to her.

From that moment, the vision for Kate’s Closet was born.

A Message from the Founder

When I began planning our International Women’s Day initiative at Sugar Plum Fine Jewelry, I simply wanted to find a place where donated purses, scarves, and accessories could go directly to women who needed them.

I had no idea that the answer to that question would walk through my door.

The day that woman came into the store asking if we might have something that would help her feel prepared for job interviews, it became very clear to me that sometimes God shows us a need not through a program or an organization, but through a person standing right in front of us.

Helping her reminded me that something as simple as a purse, scarf, or accessory can restore confidence in a moment when someone needs it most.

That experience planted a seed in my heart.

Kate’s Closet was created so that more women walking through difficult transitions could experience encouragement and support as they step into new opportunities and new beginnings.

My prayer is that this work will help women rediscover their confidence, their dignity, and their purpose.

The Biblical Vision of Kate’s Closet

The vision for Kate’s Closet is deeply inspired by the Biblical story of Esther, remembered each year during the celebration of Purim.

Esther was an ordinary young woman who found herself placed in an extraordinary position at exactly the moment her people needed courage, leadership, and faith. Though she did not fully understand the purpose of her circumstances at first, she stepped forward with bravery and faith into the role God had prepared for her.

Her story carries a powerful reminder found in Esther 4:14, “For such a time as this.”

Kate’s Closet reflects the belief that women who have walked through hardship still carry purpose, strength, and the ability to step into a new future.

By providing purses, scarves, and professional accessories that help restore confidence and dignity, the organization hopes to support women as they prepare for interviews, careers, and opportunities that allow them to rebuild their lives.

Just as Esther stepped forward into her calling, Kate’s Closet exists to help women step forward into theirs.

Closing Scripture

Proverbs 31:25

“She is clothed with strength and dignity, and she laughs without fear of the future.”

Kate’s Closet hopes to help women rediscover that strength, walk forward with dignity, and embrace the future that lies ahead.
